Can recordable DVDs play on Blue Ray player?

I've tried using DVDflick, DVD styler, and Express Burn to burn a DVD. Every time I've tried the DVD plays on my computer but won't play in my DVD player which is a Blue Ray player. I've tried both DVD-R and DVD+R. Can blue ray players not play these kinds of DVDs or am I missing some sort of "finalizing" step?
 
Make sure you record in DVD-Video format.

I would be very surprised if a BD player did not support recordables, but you never know...; check the specs.
