christian perspective? I? I quit dipping smokeless tobacco like 1 day ago, as a Christian, I felt that an addiction is wrong. However, I would like to know how coffee is deemed acceptable as a christian. Many "need" it every morning, so what's the difference? Yeah, it is unhealthy too. So what is the deciding factor that determines coffee or caffeine to be ok, but tobacco not?
Ok, thanks for the responses, obviously some people are angry at me for asking this question, probably because it says that I'm a christian, I bet if I left that part out, then it would've been no big deal. Oh and Michelle, who is forcing my beliefs on someone else, bitter much? Don't tempt me to come back to your world, I can roll with the best of you. Ne way I appreciate the responses, in my opinion they are both drugs and they are addictive, I love how some people said tobacco kills and caffeine just keeps you awake, seriously? Lets do some research first, I know I'm sarcastic, I shouldn't be, I just love the excuses that people use for the particular drug they are on, ne way thanks for the replies
Pastor Art, thank you for your reply, I do however have some questions, some current research links breast cancer in women to caffeine intake, however it is only suggested, the problem I have is that whether it causes cancer or not, whether you can break the addiction faster or not, is irrelevant, I don't understand that theology. I stopped dipping 25hrs ago, threw it in the trash, haven't had one since, been dipping for 12years. In my opinion, an addiction is an addiction, whether it causes cancer or not, whether the recovery times, are shorter are not, they both present us with adverse side effects to the body ie our temple.
Midnight.....your hilarious, "that's where they start cherry picking", I love it, so true bro, and I'm a born again Christian, I agree, think about when smoking was the social standard and now it's taboo, but kids march into tanning booths on every street corner, people drown themselves in coffee because they can't even function without it, and yeah by people I mean the church. Thanks for the humor.
The Bible, thank you for your honesty, I appreciate that.
Jane I like your answer too, thanks.
Ok God's servant you had to go there, as a Paramedic I'm pretty familiar with effects of certain drugs as well as the current studies and recommendations of "medical science" as you put it. Coffee in itself is most likely not the problem, it is the caffeine which accompanies it, nausea, dizziness, tachycardia, hypertension, palpitations, and cardiac arrythmias are a few of the possible side effects.

Well caffeine is a drug. But unless you're addicted to it, i don't think it's that much of a problem. But if you are, i'd say it's just as bad as nicotine. Bad Habits are no good.

One is a mildly addictive drug.

One is strongly addictive drug which kills 1/3 of those who get addicted.

You can un-hooked from coffee in a week with lots of patience and a small bottle of Advil.

Coffee does not cause cancer.

And that is where they start cherry picking. Caffiene is socially acceptable, so its not a sin. Tobacco is largely socially unacceptable, so it is a sin. They are both drugs, they are both highly addictive, and they are both bad for your body.

EDIT
Coffee may be healthy for you, but they are talking about 1 or 2 cups a day. It is NOT healthy when you have to drink 2-3 pots of coffee for the caffiene so you dont end up with a migraine later. And thats what I am talking about. Its socially acceptable to be addicted to caffiene, so everyone brushes it off like its no big deal. But when you look at it..... How many of the caffiene addicts here can quit caffiene cold turkey?? You cant, because you get an awful migraine. Thats withdraw.

And Michelle was overly defensive. Im an athiest, and I didnt see anything pushy in this

Many "need" food and water every so often too, is that an addiction? ;-)

If YOU think it is not good for you, don't do it, but don't force others to live by YOUR rules, YOUR interpretation of scripture, etc. Isn't your relationship with Jesus supposed to be "personal"? What part of "personal" do you not understand?

Some "addictions", some "drugs", etc., are more harmful to the body than others.

They can but most don't want to admit that they aren't adhering to the bibles law of treating your body as a temple, meaning you shouldn't pollute your system with impurities.
Personally I do both, but was taught to do neither, so much for my will power..Meh!

Christians have thier own personal convictions in many matters. So I will give you advice, but please do not in any way take it that I'm judging you. I mostly abstain from drinking coffee. I never smoked. I agree that nicotene is about as harmless as coffee, or as harmful.
Ideally the Holy Spirit and the knowledge of Jesus gives us the power to overcome any kind of addictions, and heal us. If you desire to be healed of this, then ask Jesus for deliverance. I haven't asked for deliverance from coffee, but I have realised that coffee does not help me in overcoming sexual sin, and it's also not healthy for diabetics.
Now this may sound judgemental, but I think Christians should not be drinking coffee before going to Church, or at Church. This is not something that I am going to write a bunch of tracts about and preach about, it's just an opinion of mine among many convictions.
We shouldn't be all wired and jittery worshipping the Lord. But for some people coffee has a calming effect. Oh well.
I agree there is no difference.
Smoking is the problem, and of couse the tobacco can cause cancer in the mouth.
Be sure you have accepted the Jesus as your Lord, that matters more than such minor issues.
