Can you play a game on ps3 while chatting with someone?

Is there anyway to be chatting with someone (not in a chatroom) while you are playing one game and your friend is playing another?

Ex. I am playing fallout3 and my friend is playing resistance 2.

Is there anyway to be chatting with them through the ps3 with mics?
