Can you recommend a good road bike for about $500?

A good road bike is expensive, but you can find something nice at this site. Size is very important so go to the second link.

My friend is going on a 5 day biking tour and needs to find a good road bike for about $500. Can anyone make any recommondations? She might be able to spend a little more, but not much, so please don't recommend any $500. THANKS!

OK. She's gonna need a lot of luck here. Proper sizing is gonna be a major issue. Wrong size, miserable trip. Does she know the size she needs?

Just in case the Craigslist suggestion doesn't work out,

Check with the local bike shop(s) to see if they have a used road bike for her size, or know where she might find one.

Maybe she knows someone with a road bike that she could borrow, in her size.

And last, but not least, she can buy a new hybrid, properly sized, for about $300 from a local bike shop. Outfit it with a rear rack, some inexpensive panniers, a rack sack, and she'd be set to go. All for about $500, tax included. It might be a bit slower than a road bike, but will certainly do the job. And would make climbing steep hills easier.
