I'm going to be running two amps one at 400 rms and one at 1000 rms. I plan to up grade the big 3 and get a capicator for shits and giggles. But will i need to upgrade the alternator and battery also?

how many rms can i run before i need to upgrade.
i wont want my lights to dim or anything

Dude Honestly I WOuld.. I Was Like That i have a 2500 RMS Amp And The Other One Was 1000 RMS ANd I Had A 6.0 Farad Capacitor And It Was Good For like a Week Then My Lights Started To Get Dimmer... So I Bought The Battery And It was Ok. But Later On It Happen AGain. So I Had To Upgrade The Alternator... Body Shop Told Me Anything Going Over 1000RMS Will DAmaged Your Alternator .. It Might Not Happen Now But Later On Down The Road It Will...

Capacitor is a waste. You dont NEED a HO alternator, but, your lights are going to dim. In fact, lights will dim on even 500 watt systems if the alternator is on the smaller side...

Upgrade the big three for sure, your regular battery is fine as long as it works good, and, save up for a HO alternator...

Dimming headlights are almost like a rite of passage for big stereo system users... most people dont have the money to upgrade the alternator, so they just live with it. Its not the end of the world... Obviously a HO alternator is ideal to supply your amp with all the power it needs.

odinsragess has a good answer...

I would upgrade the big 3 and see what that does for you. If you have bad dimming issues after the big 3 upgrade then getting a HO alternator will be the next step. Every car has a different amount of power it can handle before you encounter serious headlight dimming problems. The typical range for a new alternator is around 1000w RMS but many vehicles can go past that with a big 3 upgrade.

Don't waste your money on a cap, even if it is for "giggles". There are SO many better investments in your system besides a cap.

If you do get a HO alternator make sure to get a good quality one and one that will meet the demand of your system. Some HO alternators will actually produce less current at low RPMs then a stock alternator. This means your headlights would dim more then if you had your stock alternator.

Good Luck!!!
