Car Stereo Fitting Question..?

I am planning on getting my boyfriend a new car stereo and i am not sure how to go about it. Do you need to check the type of car it is going into versus the size of the stereo? Or do most stereos you can buy online and in the stores fit most or all cars (obviously not the huge LCD screen or anything, just a standard size ) So my actual question is...do i really need to pay attention to the year and car model or are the sizes pretty much universal? Thank you in advance for your answers!

Car stereo sizes are NOT universal. The first poster was correct when he said retro-fit kits can cost anywhere from $25.00 to $150.00, depending on the car stereo and the make and model of car it's going into. You may want to check out this website:

This is a retail sales website that deals in all types of audio (including car audio), but they have a handy feature that lets you see which car stereos they sell will fit in whatever car you specify. If it doesn't fit, for most stereos it also tells you how much the retro-fit kit costs. It might help you decide which car stereo to buy -- obviously, your best bet is to get one that'll fit your boyfriend's car without a retro-fit kit.

the place you buy the stereo at will tell what adapter kit you will need to buy.

NOTE these can cost from 25 dollars to 150 dollars. just go to any place and let them know the make model and year. they will have the kit and radio for you.
