car stereo problem. My volume dosent work when using ipod?

I have a RCA audio cable for my ipod. I plugged it in to the back of my Kenwood stereo deck and the volume dosent work. The volume is being controlled by the ipod not the stereo so it is very quiet. No matter how loud I turn up the stereo it dosent turn the sound up. Also the ipod sound plays no matter what mode, radio aux or cd, that I'm in. Any ideas on what's wrong?
 
here's a quick fyi:
the true Ipod cable (not headphone plug in ) is best to connect an ipod
the ipod has a very very low voltage output and thus poor volume. a line booster is needed. something like a PAC line signal booster
