...their religion? It seems to be very easy to unintentionally offend people in matters concerning their religion. Why is it that so many people seem to think that you should treat their religion with 'kid gloves'?

As an example, check the additional comment made by Stina here (this refers to Catholic beliefs which is why I've asked for opinions from Catholics);

The 'please don't joke around because it offends me' comment can only apply to my answer - which I considered to be a serious answer to a question that I thought interesting (and had already starred).

It is a fact that many people used to believe that geese hatched from barnacles, and that some catholics used to eat them on fast days because they didn't consider them to be meat so why take offence? (some original sources quoted here; http://scienceblogs.com/evolvingthoughts/2006/08/tales_of_the_barnacle_goose.php )

Is the fact that I said that I liked my answer more than the correct one really that offensive?
Jay; Calling someone names is not the same as jokes - besides I'm talking about people taking offense when 'joking' was perceived but not intentional.
Newell; Whether true or not that has nothing at all to do with the question - are you somehow offended that I asked it?

Anyone care to comment on my example?

Hello,

Much for the same reason they are offended about matters concerning their country, nationality, family, social status, sexual orientation etc. They tend to take these issues as a personal attack.

Cheers,

Michael Kelly

In today's times, I find the atheist community far more offended by mere Religion (especially Christianity) then the opposite.
You don't find Christians taken everyone to court to remove GOD from the public forum.

Religion is truth based on belief. When you challenge that, or poke fun at it, you are taking something very sacred and reducing it to the level of jest.

Think of it this way:
If I were to call your mother awful names, suggest your 'father' is one of 8 men who could be your biological parent, etc., it is likely that you would be offended. This is because mothers are sacred to most of us.

How much more so is God sacred to us?

I'm not saying you have to wear 'kid gloves,' as you suggested. However, I would say that you should be prepared for violent reactions when you argue with someone's faith.

I don't have a problem with jokes, I have a problem with people who try to argue about anything religious, even past the point where you can say "believe what you want to believe" and they'll keep trying to tell you that books were a common household item 2000 years ago...

I've grown up with the Simpsons, South Park and family Guy.... nothing offends me anymore.

If you are struggling to live a good live and all you get is abuse you may become sensitive

Catholics have 1.2 Billion members under one leader. They have been around for 2000 years.

We will be around long after you are gone.

Being offended is a choice they make. The morals they've been taught require that they be offended by anything and everything that does not conform to their narrow viewpoints...that and their over-inflated sense of self-importance.
