Changed battery on 1994 bmw 325i now it wont start.. any suggestions?

its not my car, but i deal mainly with japanese and domestics, so working on a beemer is kindve new to me... my sisters bf changed the battery and now its not even attempting to crank, i checked all the fuses and theyre all fine... i think it may be the starter but i wanted to get a bit more input before i have him spend money on something he might not even need.
 
I know this is probably a stupid question, but is the battery hooked up backwards???
I can't imagine he put a new battery in a car he didn't know what was wrong with it in the first place. I'm assuming that it was running but not charging, leading him to replace the battery.
