Hardware is comparable? Not exactly, the hardware on the PS3 is better, just not fully utilized yet. At least if you want to talk about the hardware that really counts. Anyway the FREE service for the PS3 includes the PLAYING GAMES ONLINE against other people. PSN Plus has some nice little extra features, but really isn't needed(although more worth the money then Xbox Live in my opinion, but I don't think I should have to pay EXTRA just to play games against other people, especially when they refuse to let you play on split screen anymore).

...better deal? The hardware is comparable and most games are released on both platforms. How are the online services for playstation? I've heard that there is a premium service that you can sign up for that cost around $50, what does that include? What does the free basic service provide?

Also, can PS3 play video files from an external hard drive?

The service contains everything you need, the playstation network store like the xbox uses points to buy games off of it. And yes, it can play video files from an external hard drive, but its easier to plug your computer in and get the videos off of there if they're on it.

Follow this guide to hook up a PC to a PS3:

to make it easier heres the answer off of that site:

Yes you can do it by linking it to your Ethernet. Just do a network scan and your PC should come up . After this your pc will come up with a pop up window saying that a remote device is being connected. Click yes

PSN wont let you down. much much better than xbox live. PlayStation plus(premium service) gives you tons of free ps1 games, full game demos, and more. but even psn gives away free stuff. like sometimes they let you rent movies for free. with xbox live you have to pay money to download demos. silver accounts can't download demos. You can connect any hard drive to a ps3 as long as its not formatted to NTFS. PSN gives you access to psn store which instead of using Sony points uses dollars. you get movies, full ps3 games, demos, full ps1 games, themes, avatars, and applications. you can play, voice/video/text chat, and compare trophies with your friends.
