My son owns a 2007 Xterra "X" model, and the other day he decided to go four wheeling through rough mud next to a nearby construction site. According to him, he stopped the car and engaged into 4Lo and everything worked out fine. However, on his way home he must have forgot to disengage 4Lo, which was still engaged when I got into the car the next morning. This means he drove about two and a half miles at around 45 mph in 4Lo. The only thing I know about four wheel drive, which I gleaned from reading the manual (something he obviously didn't), is that you aren't supposed to go over a maximum of 30 mph in 4Lo.
Needless to say, I'm pretty angry at his recklessness, but I have absolutely know way of knowing whether or not anything is broken. I went into the garage, put it in neutral and flipped between 2WD, then 4Hi and 4Lo, and everything seemed to engage just fine. When I engage into 4Hi, you can hear a small hum come from the front of the car, and when I switch to 4Lo you can hear a slightly louder hum and feel a single, short click. Are these sounds normal, or did he ruin his car? If it sounds like a problem, what would it most likely be, and can you give me an estimated cost of fix so I know how much money he's going to owe me?
Thank you.
