Do cruise ship employees get to leave the ship for long when they reach port?

I am seriously considering pursuing career in the cruise ship industry. I would love to travel abroad and I feel like this would be the cheapest and most enjoyable way of doing it, short of joining the military of course. I was just curious if employees get much leisure time when you reach the port of your destination, like can they go out and experience some of the new city, too.

I worked on cruise ships for years as a musician. The time allowed on ports differ from job to job but as a musician we got a lot of downtime to check out the ports. If you are a bartender, room stewart, cook or something like that you don't get too much time off and you work your ass off so your time off will probably be spent sleeping. Do some research before you go and ask people that have done the job you want to do and you will get an honest answer. Good luck!!!
