Does 4 weeks paid vacation seem a little excessive for a home daycare provider?

We have been with our provider for 2.5 years. I need to review my contract with her but I believe she was contracted to get 3 weeks vacation/year (paid, which is how most home daycares are around here). The last year she seems to be taking more and more time off, which is really hurting my husband and I.....we are using all of our vacation around her schedule (we take turns) and never really get to enjoy any vacation time as a family. Just wondering your opinions.
Jen - but 4 weeks PAID? We can't pay twice!

Yes. I have always thought paid vacations for such people are ludicrous, but something one generally has to put up with because it's the norm in many areas. Four weeks is obviously way over the top; in fact I would have dropped her for taking three weeks.

Even two weeks is an imposition on all families whose children are cared for; they lose child care, likely incurring extra expenses and inconvenience, and have to pay for that privilege.

Now when you say "home daycare", is this for a child or an elderly family member? If this is for a childcare service, 3 weeks is PLENTY of vacation time, especially if he/she is being paid. Now if this is for elderly care, and they have been employed with you for 2.5 years, I would say 3 weeks of vacation for the year is reasonable. If they get 4 weeks, then they are very lucky. I have an office job, so I can't really compare, however, my first year of employment I got 5 days (8 hours each day) of vacation, and 3.5 days of sick leave. All of which is paid. The following year I got the same, plus an extra 3 days of sick leave. At year three, I will get 2 weeks vacation and 1 week of sick leave. The same will happen each year until I hit year 5, then I will get 3 weeks of vacation. Four weeks is way too much paid-time off. Especially for childcare. If you have been with this provider for 2.5 years now, it sounds like you are very satisfied with them. So it maybe worth it to accept the terms, but like I said, 3 weeks is more than enough time off. Oh what I would do with that much vacation time.... Good luck!

Wow 4 weeks, wish I can get 3 days in a row....... Maybe I should be a baby/elder take care of person
