Does it matter which brand of external dvd drive I buy for my laptop?

I have a Sony Vaio laptop. Is it going to matter which EXTERNAL (via USB) dvd drive I buy to use with it? My dad just hooked up an ASUS with no issues, but that wasn't a simple USB hookup.
