Does the Samsung sgh-a777 phone require a microSD card for MP3 player?

i have a samsung sgh-a777 phone. its a music phone, but it didnt come with a USB cord or a microSD card. i just purchased a USB cord, but does it require a microSD card in order for the MP3 player to work? im not quite sure what a microSD card is even used for. thanks
