Does the white xbox 360 pads work with elite console?

Does the white xbox 360 pads work with elite console?
I have just got a elite xbox 360 and my normal white pad does not work on it.
Has this happened to anyone else?
I know i have pressed the connect button but it does not connect you would think that they would be compatible :-(

The white controllers are compatible with the Elite and the black controllers are compatible with the Pro and Arcade. Turn on the console and the controller. Hold down the little button on the front of the console next to the memory card slot until the green ring of light around the power button spins around and starts flashing. Hold down the little button on the top of the controller near the bumper buttons until the ring of light around the guide button (the glowing X) spins around and starts flashing. After each flashes a few times, the upper left segment on the console's ring of light and that same segment on the controller's ring of light will stay lit. Do this to each controller you want to connect. Each time, another segment on the console's ring of light will stay lit and that matching segment on each controller will too. If it doesn't work the first time, keep trying.
