Then he proceeds to try to convince her to join a professional organization he belongs to, telling her the meetings draw a lot of peers due to the great locations. The next one is in San Francisco, she should come. He will sponsor her and they can "hang out".

No, he is not paying her way. He is sponsoring her for membership in the professional organization.
