Downloaded an avi file and it won't play in divx or vlc player?

It's saying that it's an unsupported file but it does have an avi extention. It also says that it can not be played without downloading additional direct show filters. Anybody know how I can fix this problems, have been trying to figure it out for a few days now.
Thanks
Downloaded the ffdshow, but when I open it up it's like reading arabic. I don't understand anything. Guess it's time to start reading a little bit then stopping to google the rest.

Your missing a codec, you could use a program like Media Info lite to see what you need (see how the actual video and audio were encoded).

You could also just install ffdshow which should have any direct show filter or codec you would need.

Avi is only a container, doesn't tell how the actual video or audio was encoded.

I don't know if VLC will use external codecs, Media Player will and there is also The KMPlayer which I think is a lot better than VLC.
