To buy you must have online.Id update it after installation by starting game.Once updated-a internet connection wont be necassary as long as you dont delete game from hard drive
You should not have to be on live, the disc should have any updates you might need.
Only reason you will need to be on live was if you wanted any of the download content. *if available*
