Hey. How much should it cost to buy and install a new gasket in the passenger door of my 2004 M3 (the original gasket was ripped half-way off the door)? The mechanic I'm using says that it COULD be glued back on but that a glue-job would not last more than 3 months.

Is he right? And if so, how much should i pay for parts and labor?

Thanks!
BTW i know NOTHING about cars so unless the gluing job is COMPLETELY IDIOT-PROOF, i won't feel comfortable doing it
I'm sorry; let me clarify.

The mechanic actually wants to RE-INSTALL the gasket, meaning not glue it, but re-attach it way that he says is more secure (by buying the whole new part). He thinks that gluing is the WRONG way because the gluing won't last.

Glue should work effectively if used correctly. I would not expect to be charged much. Maybe .30 hours or less especially if he said it was only good for 3 months. I would go to a BMW dealer and see what they say. I know you can glue these on and make them last as if they were new. I've done it before

You can fix the existing gasket with gasket goo. They sell various types for different applications, including low temperature (door gasket), even make one formula for motor head gaskets, and these are reliable when done properly. The stuff you want is blue, it's like silicone but it's not silicone, and you apply it to the seal, close the seal, and let it form overnight, then trim the excess and you've just made a seal, or a new gasket. glue it to the frame with any bonding agent, epoxy, it's like a rubber so anything that bonds rubber or polyurethane to metal will hold it.

It would be easier to buy the right seal from the dealer or online, but this patch is an alternative that would cost around 5% plus your time and energy. I made a seal with goo for a Saab transmission that worked for over 3 years until I sold the car, after I took it apart to study the engine.

good luck.
