Im not a big fisher but I managed to find a rod and reel so I've been using that lately but on the reel there is a dial at the bottom numbered 1 to 9 and I can twist it tighter or looser btu Im not too sure what it even does? Also there is a small sliding switch on the side that can go to 2 positions but I dont know what that does either, any explanations?

the 1 - 9 dial is the magnetic cast control that slows the reel at the end of the cast. it works in conjunction with the knob under the handle. both need to be correctly adjusted for best casting.
the sliding switch may be a click actuation device but is more likely a "flipping switch" which changes the freespool control to use it for flipping.

if you can provide the info on what reel type, who made it and the model number we could be certain to answer it correctly.

but i'll guess anyways.
the knob is your drag. drag on a reel is what allows the line to slip out, the fish to take line. a looser drag means line comes out with less pressure, stiffer means it needs more pressure.
with proper drag setting you can land a fish that weighs twice the lines test.
also with proper drag you will land more fish.

if you don't master the concept of drag and how to use it, you wont ever catch many fish.

the switch on the side unlocks the reel for reverse reeling. that may be desirable if you were fishing off a pier or something and wanted to jig up and down without moving the pole, otherwise its good for tangling the line when it unreels too fast.
i never unlock the reverse reel. if i want to let line out, i loosen the drag and pull some out, and it doesn't come too fast and cause a tangle.
