Fitting something big in car and not shutting boot - legal?

I want to buy a flat packed shed but have a small hatch back. Is it legal to put it in the back of the car (back seat down) and then not shutting the boot properly but using one of those elastic cords and perhaps putting something red at the end of the box? Thanks
