For people who say atheism is a religion?

The ones who call atheism a religion are the ones who have no idea what atheism is or what a religion is for that matter. Unless it falls into their own beliefs and practices, they are oblivious. So, you will be hard pressed to find someone who calls atheism a religion capable of explaining it as such without reflecting in some way on their own attitudes about their own religion and beliefs.


Religion:
1. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.
1.(A) A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.
2. The life or condition of a person in a religious order.
3. A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader.
4. A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion.

None of these definitions found describe atheism. But, trying to explain that to them is like trying to explain thermodynamics to a two year old.
 
Ok, here's your chance to prove it to me. For kicks, let's just use Durkheim's model.

Durkheim condensed religion into four major functions:

1.) Disciplinary: forcing or administrating discipline
2.) Cohesive: bringing people together, a strong bond
3.) Vitalizing: to make more lively or vigorous, vitalise, boost spirit
4.) Euphoric: a good feeling, happiness, confidence, well-being

Argue (well) that atheism has all 4 of these things.

Um, atheism has no faith. I think that's sort of the point.

Dude, I'm throwing you guys a bone here and you just completely ignore the model. Typical.
Ocean: 1.) this isn't preaching. 2.) atheist try to convert? Really? Since when?

I really am disappointed with some of these answers.
 
haha, impossible. Atheist is a single response of "false" to the following statement: I personally believe God(s) exists.

I hope people that think Atheism is a religion can see that, given the broad definition of an Atheist, it can't be a religion.
