For Christmas 2011, we are looking at going on the Golden Princess to Hawaii.
There will be three of us including two children (they will be 16 and 13).
In the past we have been on four cruises, three with P and O whom is the sister line to Princess.
I was just wondering if this cruise was suitable for children.
Also, I have been reading reviews and many say the food isn't the greatest.
Also, in the past, when we went on a cruise, we travelled with family so there was always a big group of us at dinner each night so we had a reservation, however, as there will only be three of us, I was wondering whether we will have to eat with other people which I really do not want.
I have heard that for some restaurants you have to pay extra, how many free restaurants are there?
Also, I was wondering if they have places where you can buy ice-cream at any time.
Also, do you have time to look around LA before getting on the ship or getting off?
I am fine with the sea days, but I heard there was ukulele classes. I have my own ukulele so would I be able to bring it?
We have done the Caribbean three times so we wanted a change, but is Hawaii as good (or better)?
I basically just want to know what this holiday is like, what the ship is like and whether it is worth the expense?
Many Thanks

I have been on this cruise 2 year ago and will be going again in December 2010. I am the coordinator of the Cruise Critic Meet and Greet for the cruise and you can find much information at my web site and the Cruise Critic Forum.

NOTE: the second link requires that you join the forum and is specific to this particular cruise. For more general cruise information go to:

The cruise is mostly older adults due to the length and the time of year. There are programs for teens so they should have a good time but don't expect a huge number unless you are taking the cruise at Christmas.

In my opinion the food is great. You have a choice of fixed time dining or anytime dining. They both serve the same food and if you should be able to get a table for 3 but part of the fun of a cruise is meeting others. You can also eat at the buffet 24 hours a day no matter where you are scheduled to dine. There is an Italian Restaurant and a Steak House that does charge extra for reservations.

Ice cream is sold at scheduled times but there is also free ice cream at announced times. You can also get it in the dining room. The ship leaves from San Pedro so unless you stay an extra day you will have no time to see LA.

Yes there are ukulele classes. You can bring your own. Sign up for the class as soon as it is announced since it fills up fast.
