I just bought a full suspension bike from costco, which was a mistake.
The majority of the riding I do is street riding, but I do go bike trails often which are full of rock gardens, some drops, and are real bumpy.

I do not think i want a full suspension since it slows me down on the road. Also, the bike i got was a costco bike!

But from what i have written, Hardtail sounds good for me right?

a lot of road riding, but also quite some off road riding.

so would hardtail be good?

also, you know any good hardtail brands and models that can take a beating, and are not over 300$.

I am gonna look into cragslist, etc

but what is a good hardtail bike that can take a beating, and is not that expensive.

Take a look here:http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=25802&subcategory_ID=3050 This bike can handle what you throw at it. You will not get much new for your pricepoint and you really should get into the $4-500 price range so you can at least get a 9 speed bike that will be more versatile for you and if you decide later to upgrade components you will not have to replace the ENTIRE drive train to do it. Sure you can get a bike on craigslist too but do you really want a used bike that who knows what could be wrong with it and you will not get any kind of service plan or warranty with?...think about that too!

This bike is pretty good:

Its about your price range, its reletivley strong so it will hold up well when your on your trails, and it also light so it wont slow you down when your ridding on the road. Kona is a quite well know, good brand so go to a mountain bike store in your city and they will probably carry it, or be capable of recommending a close substitute.

If you don't like that, this link might be able to help you pick out another bike: http://www.konaworld.com/09_bikes.htm
And if you don't like anythere, then I would suggest going to a good mountain bike store in your city and picking out a nice hardtail.
