Have Red Blue Green cables hooked up to the right colour jacks on my DVD...

...recorder anfd my TV? but am still getting no picture , just diagonal different colours slashes and no sound , don't see anything on the TV to change the settings to composite but may be on the remote , if there is no composite setting what am I doing wrong
 
Hook it up composite then go into the DVD's menu and change it to component.
