How can I find out how my friend feels about gay people without alerting him?

I want to tell a friend of mines I am gay but I do not want to embarrass myself and lose him as a friend if it turns out he a homophobic person or something. So how do I figure out how he feels about gay people without freaking him out. It never really came up in conversation.

Take him to see the movie Milk. It is up for Oscars, so take in a couple ones that were nominated. Slumdog was good.

See something like Milk and then go out for coffee. See where the conversation goes.
