How can I play online DivX videos on VLC media player?

VLC says it can play DivX files. Can I play an online DivX video (one that's uploaded/ embedded on a website) on VLC media player? The new DivX web player sucks and makes both Firefox and Chrome crash. So, now I have to find an alternate method to watching online vids.
 
Far as I know, only something in a system CD/DVD tray, or in a saved file can be played in VLC player. It is not designed to be an online media player to my knowledge.
If you could download the file, then VLC would surely play it.
