How could God send the jews to hell if they're his original people?

i know you have to believe in Jesus and that he saved you (which i think is more than fair. he died an awful death and suffered a lot to save us and then some of us deny him...) but i don't see how God can send his people to hell for not believing Jesus was the Messaih. especially people today who weren't there to witness Jesus so they can't even make an educated decision on whether he is the Savior.
