How did the people from jersey shore become so famous?

And why were they one selected to do the show? They were pretty much nobodies before they starred in the show. Now they're millionaires because of that show. Out of all the people, why did they pick Snooki and Mike the Situation, and people like that?

They had auditions I think, so they picked the most ridiculous and the ones they KNEW would start drama, and BAM Jersey Shore is one of the most popular shows
