How do I connect my Netgear Router to the internet using my Verizon USB modem?

Ok so we are trying to connect some of our devices in our house to the internet without all kinds of cords and everything. Our devices include Itouchs, Wii, PS3, etc. We were told, "Oh just go buy a router." Its supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread for this kind of thing. So we went to the store and the guy at the store said that, indeed, a router was all we needed. So we splurge the $60 and buy a Netgear N300 Wireless Router. Well we get it home and discover that we need a modem. A tech guy we know says since we are using Verizon USB modems we can just patch it through one of our computers. We try this and the setup genie can't complete the setup because we are missing a connection. We checked our Wii and it sees the router but it can't connect to the internet. What are we supposed to do now? Do we have to spend more money on an actual modem or is there a way to make the technology we already have work for us?
