How do I convert widescreen DIVX to my square IPOD without changing aspect ratio?

I have an old square analog television. I've been downloading a lot of videos and converting them to play on my iPod, and then plugging the iPod into my TV to play them. A lot of what I've downloaded are old tv shows, so they're already the correct aspect ratio, but I'm trying to download some movies as well. The movies I'm downloading are all widescreen. I've tried a number of different software options, and they either will either push the video in from left to right and squish the image into a distorted view, or they will not change the aspect ratio at all, and I lose the left and right sides of the screen. I'm looking for a software that will take the widescreen image, add the letterbox at the top and bottom of the screen, and leave me with a square image that doesn't remove the aspect ratio of the video. Any suggestions?

Look there and see which Ipod you have as im not sure but ive used their psp video converting software and its amazing ive never had any problem with it so i would expect their other programs to be just as good you might want to try it
