How do I play a region 1 DVD on a Pal TV?

What do I need to do it? I have a region-free DVD player but the R1 dvds I own have zigzag lines on the edge of the objects on the screen

Actually, the player is more like a stereo that can play DVD's from any region, could that be why the quality is reduced?
