How do I put songs on my Ipod from Itunes library?

Okay, I have Itunes downloaded onto my computer, but I don't know how to get the songs on my IPod. I tried dragging the song I want and and put it where the picture of my Ipod is on the side, but it won't work. Can you guys help me please?

***Eveytime I press sync it says:
Erase and Sync
Transfer Purchases
or cancel
