How do I use my High, Mid, and Low levels to make my distortion sound better?

I play in a band that plays smooth and melodic chorus' along with brutal breakdowns and metal riffs and I am still confused on how to get my right sound. I know the EQ knobs on the head can help a lot an I was wondering where in the ballpark I should be on each to produce a clean, clear, and heavy distortion. My guitar is a Schecter Diamond Series with EMG pick ups and the guitar sounds great, I just would like to know for the sake of having the best sound possible. Please help
