how do people get high torrent speeds of like 800kb/s or 1000?

a friend of mine is able to get speeds of about 700 - 800 kb/s. ive seen it go to as high as 1000!!! how do u do that. my normal is about 100 or 150. i think i went up to 250 one time. but that was with a huge amount of seeds. how do they do that?
