How do you convince parents to let you own a Mobile?

I'm 16 and have never owned a mobile in my entire life, My mum is very distrusting of me because I have slight ADD and doesn't reliase the dangers of me having absoulete no contact can bring. I mean I've been lost lots of times and my schedule could change anytime. She keeps saying "NO!" and tells me I'm still too young and not independent enough to own a mobile. I just can settle with a cheap $20 a month plan and you may be thinking if you want a phone then get a job? Well I tried but I have gotten rejected from many places because I simply do not own a mobile therefore they can not contact me.

So what can I do to convince her in a reasonable manner that will not end in some random conflict because in this day and age, nearly every teenager in a developed country owns a phone.
 
ask her for a pre paid one. at first say you will at least buy half the credit for it and once your out theres no going over the bill you just have to buy more and can still receive calls and texts.
try working your way there though like if you can show her your more independent. do things for yourself like your own washing, get your self home from school (if your allowed or dont already), always be 10 mins early home if/when you go to a friends house etc.
