How do you feel about mandatory detention for asylum seekers (boat people)...

...in Australia? Australia has a law that enables them to detain unlawful non-citizens by placing them in detention centres for unlimited amounts of time (often months, and some for years). The conditions of detention centres are not favourable, and do cause problems for the asylum seekers. Unlike a prisoner though, detainees are not given a sentence. They do not know when they will be released, yet legally they have not committed a crime. Currently Australia does not have a law which says that it is illegal for anyone to enter the country without a valid visa. And International Law, states that a person who is seeking protection from persecution can not be penalised for entering another country without going through the proper channels first.

This is just a little bit of background information on the subject. I'm working on a uni assignment, and I need an idea of the 'opposing argument' to my thesis. I'd prefer it if this wasn't used as an attack on boat people, or to present racist notions either way. Feel free to state your argument (for or against) the subject, and try to give support or reasons to back up your claim.
