How do you know the maximum amount of weight held on a boat?

In science, we're learning about friction. So I was wondering about this...

I don't think this has much to do with friction but its all about displacement. As you know dense objects sink such as rocks and steel. Less dense objects float like styrofoam and cork. So it comes done to density. Water has a density of 1 kg/L. So a litre of water would weigh 1 kg. To determine if something floats you first need to know the volume of the object. For boats that can be tricky because it would be the volume of the boat sinks. Once you know the volume of the boat in litres to find the maximum mass that can be put on the boat doing the following calculation 1/volume of the object this will equal the maxium mass of the object. In the case of the boat you must subtract the mass of the boat from that number to find the mass you can put in the boat.

figure the cubic dimensions of the boat below the waterline. Find the weight of that same volume of water. That is the maximum weight of the boat and its contents.
