How do you rip a copy-protected dvd to your hardrive? Which free program to use?

How do you rip a copy-protected dvd to your hardrive? Which free program to use?

I'm suppose to make a movie mash-up for the movie. But I have no way of getting it on the computer. And I downloaded 2GB of the movie just to find out a chunk of it was missing, so the connection is at the rate of a snail.
Can CloneCD do it?
