how I edit a disk that I have recorded?

if this does not make sense then I recorded a t.v. show (on a disk) and I want to get rid of the comercials. I don't know if I can do this I tried doing it on my dvd player but it keep getting this stupid circle with a slash through it. Do you know what to do and if you do then how do you do it? can you do it on the computer or what?
