How is a blu-ray player better than a dvd player?

Is it true that regular dvd's can be played in a blu-ray player? Is the picture quality better with a blu-ray player than with a regular dvd player? Also, if I chose to just keep my dvd player, can I use blu-ray discs in it? For example, someone gave me "Scarface", Limited Edition (with Al Pacino), Blu-Ray + Digital, but I don't (yet) have a blu-ray player. Can I put the "Scarface" disc in my dvd player without damaging the Scarface disc, and/or damaging my dvd player? Actually, I guess my question is more than one question, but I am hoping for some good answers and advice.

Yes, they can. A Blu-ray player is also an excellent upconverting DVD player. Meaning it will take your SD DVDs and upconvert them to at least 720p (which is considered HD) so they look even better on your HD TV.

Also a Blu-ray disk will not work in a DVD player, but if you have already put it in there it will not ruin it.

Also Blu-ray is 5x higher quality then a normal DVD.

You can play regular dvds in a blu ray player but cannot play blu rays in a regular dvd player. Hope that helps.

Blue Rays can play DVD's but not the other way around, is it better quality? well the foreground is sharper but I notice the background to be grainy. If you get a chance to stream a HD netflix video do that so you can see what a blue ray player will look like.
