I need clarity on a few things from someone who has worked/is working on a cruise line. An acquaintance who worked as a server/bartender on a cruise ship said that most workers work a 9 to 10 month "contract" term/stint then the cruise ship pays for your plane ticket to wherever you want for the other 2 months out of the year that you don't work and will fly you back to the port of call when your contract starts again.

My question is: if this is true, where have you flown to? Do they have connections to places with short-term housing? I am asking because I have no family to stay with for the 2 months so I'm not sure where I would go etc. or if I could just stay on the ship and not work? I don't want to be stranded or live in those weekly hotels :(

Other question is female/medical related: I need to be on birth control for a blood disorder so would I need to get a 12 month prescription filled out in advance from the pharmacy?

Is it true that Norwegian Cruise Lines is the only cruise line that will hire American citizens because the other cruise lines hire non-U.S. citizens? I'm hoping to be able to apply to more than 1 cruise line to increase my chances.

Thank you very much in advance for your help! I appreciate any insight and I apologize in advance if my "header" question isn't very clear...I couldn't think of a shorter way of asking all of my questions in less than 110 characters :)
