My new job requires me to drive a lot back and forth between trenton new jersey and buffalo new york which is about 8 hrs away about 400 miles each way ill be driving this 2 to 3 times a month other months more then others.
I am planing on getting a used car with any where from about 50,000 to 100,000 miles. Could any one tell me what's the best number of miles my used car should have on it for all the driving i will be doing i need this to last me about 4 to 6 years. I also enjoy going on road trips to so i do a lot of driving. Please don't tell me to buy a new car that is not an option for me sadly.

Also if any one has experience driving this distance for work, could u tell me what kinda car would be good for this i was thinking a truck or suv since i will be driving a lot and would want something comfortable for the long drive. But im not so sure about a truck or suv with gas price going down who knows if they will jump back up to $4 a gallon again.

This question is unanswerable. If you want to end up with as few miles as possible, you need to start with as few as possible. There simply aren't any constraints that could be used to turn it into a question that's not nonsense.

What you really want to figure out here is the minimum cost and aggravation to do what you want to do. You could do that, if you had life cycle cost information for every car that you wanted to consider. You won't have that, but you could probably make some reasonable estimates. You can estimate the gasoline cost, right? You could probaly make a guess at the repair costs, but that's a lot less sure. You can also guess the depreciation cost based on PAST depreciation of the same car.

Good luck. It's a very interesting math problem you got there.

I think it depends on how well the car has been taken care of.
I bought a 2002 chevy hd 4x4 it had 180,000 on it but one owner. I have had it now for three years and all I have done is keep up the maintnace. All have had to do is keep the oil changed it has been really dependable.
From what I have heard though Toyotas run for ever as long as you keep up the maintnace. I would try to find something that only has had one owner and some where between 50,000 and a 100,000 .
You mite check out that site i think it is called car fax.
