how not to die when starting on a bigger bike than I should?

I've taken the MSF and I know it's better to start small, but through the graciousness of a friend I've obtained a bike of a larger sportier persuasion (sport tourer but still fairly sporty (rf900R)) for free. So, you can throw in the "omg you're stupid you're going to die", but I'm not in a financial position to get something small. I plan to spend like a month in parking lots before hand and taking it super slow (I'm too scared to go fast :( ), but aside from just practicing like a mofo can you offer some sound advice for common squid mistakes and how to make my learning experience as deathless as possible?

thanks a bunch :)
