How to download a huge torrent file without lagging LAN network?

Downloading a huge (1.34 GB) torrent file and I just upgraded from Netgear Wireless-G to D-Link Wireless-N 150. My girlfriend and I are connected via LAN (connected via the ethernet cable) and the download is lagging our connections very badly. When I pause the download, the internet becomes normal again. How can I configure the settings so that the LAN network runs fine when downloading a big torrent file?
 
The best way to do this will be to limit your download and upload rate. Changing these settings will vary between different torrent clients. Some have a "Scheduler" that will limit your speeds according to day and time. Others just have a global speed limiter.
