I'm refereeing my first game this weekend, and I got an email from the soccer association to try and observe a moment of silence before all games on 9/11, but that you can't FORCE it. It also said there aren't specific instructions and to use discretion. The game is U8 so it's all little kids. Do I ask the coaches? Also any advice on your first time refereeing? Thanks. If it makes a difference I live and work in NY minutes from NYC so I really think a moment of silence is important. A moment of silence is one minute right?

Yes I definitely suggest talking to the coaches. I think they'll most likely be open to it. Make sure both agree and ask them to talk to their players about it. It's about a minute long, but if you have young kids playing a minute might be too long (most kids under 8 can only stay quiet and still for about 35 seconds). So I suggest maybe 30 seconds since they're little. The thought is still there, I just don't think 8 year olds can sit still for a minute.
