Bang for the buck is Triumph. When you compare quality for price you can't beat one. Japanese sport bikes are made to last just a few years. This is because the pistons move a shorter distance at a faster rate, i.e. what the red line is for RPMs.

If you want a larger engine than a Daytona and more performance than a Speed Triple (both sub $10K) I would look at the new BMW S1000RR (about $14K depending on options).

Depends on your budget. Any of the Big Four's 600 multis would represent a big step up in power. The Triumph 675 may be the most capable bike in that class; since it's not a race bike the extra 675cc isn't really cheating. I'm really partial to the new 1050 Tiger, one of the most appealing sport touring bikes around.

If nimbleness and handling mean more to you than sheer power, the Suzuki DRZ400SM is a quick, nimble motard. The KTM Duke singles are more of the same, witht top-quality components, light weight and very quick handling.

Hopefully you've learned to ride it to it's full capabilities, or very near. By that I mean you know what the last 1/3 of the throttle opening feels like at 9000 rpm in 4th gear, so now you're ready to move on to pretty much anything. I personally prefer 2 or 3 cylinders e.g. Suzuki Gladius or SV1000, Honda VTR1000, Triumph Speed Triple. Heck, even a Buell!!
