Java was my first programming language. I learned from "SAMS Teach Yourself Java 2 in 24 Hours" but it was long and tedious and my copy is long outdated.
I also owned "Sams Teach Yourself C++ in 10 Minutes" which was very simple. If you can find some sort of "Teach Yourself Java in 10 Minutes" it would fit your description perfectly.
