And now for the real question...I have an old computer which has the above mentioned set up...
just got a new Lite On DVD R/W that is set up for SATA connectors...learn something new every day.
Well it came in a combo deal from Newegg / w a G-card for less than the regular price of the G-card.
Someone has a SATA HDD they said they would give me but haven't gotten it yet...
A. if/when I get it...what is the name of the cable I need to go from the HDD to the DVD R/W
so I can just order one from Newegg and is it a separate cable from the SATA to mobo cable ?
B. do they make a cable that will adapt the new (SATA connectors) dvd R/W to the IDE ATA
HDD ?

To put it bluntly, it would be cheaper and far simpler to get a IDE based DVD drive if you need one rather than trying to connect a SATA drive to a motherboard that doesn't have SATA already built into it. If your motherboard doesn't have SATA connections on it (which would have to be from 2003 or earlier), then you can't use a SATA drive without some sort of converter - either in line or a PCI plug in card.

SATA cables go directly from the motherboard to the drive. There is no such animal as a HDD to DVD SATA cable. Even IDE cables really go from the motherboard to drives, except IDE cables can go to 1 or 2 drives. There's no direct data flow from one drive to the other on the same cable - it all gets routed through your motherboard.
